Positive transitions-care consists of intentional systems and processes designed to help students, families, and staff navigate the challenges of transitions within, between and beyond schools. This is especially crucial for international schools, who often experience high turnover amongst their community and represent diverse cultures. As globalization continues to grow, so does the need for positive transitions-care.
A culture of positive transitions-care can enhance the development of learning, relationships and wellbeing. The research literature is clear. When young people are equipped with the language of transitions and understand what to expect from transitions, they are more likely to thrive and adjust better to new social, learning and cultural environments. By supporting students, families, and staff to navigate transitions within, between and beyond schools, to navigate transitions effectively it prepares them for future transitions in all aspects of life. Safe Passage Across Networks (SPAN) provides a global network of positive transitions-care providers, aims to maintain transition support standards, and offers professional development, online courses and tailored training around positive transitions-care.
As more schools are looking at improving their transitions-care programs, this is a unique opportunity to develop a common language to address the challenges and benefits of building a solid transitions-care program within and between schools. Once students, staff, and families are well versed in the language of transitions-care, understand the transition cycle, and build the traditions and rituals around those different stages, the culture of transitions-care will start to become part of the school culture. A successful transitions-care program is one which helps all members of the community moving within and between schools to maintain their attachment systems so that they can reap the benefits of a globally mobile life. With this in mind, the African Network of Transition Support Collaborative (ANTS-C) aims to connect international schools across Africa to share and exchange resources and best practices related to positive transition care for all members of the school community.
