Description

This workshop will share case studies of how schools have addressed common challenges in contemporary teaching in international school contexts. Participants will learn key principles used in each case, and ideas that can be adapted to their own practice and school contexts. The first case focuses on how a school transformed its approach to the IB Diploma, specifically in relation to academic pressure, student burnout and perfectionism. This is relevant to schools seeking to support students in the final years of study, regardless of the curriculum offered. The second case focuses on how science teachers in Ghana were able to transform their classrooms from teacher-centred to more student-centred. This is a leading-edge example of how pedagogic practices that often seem out of reach can become feasible, particularly in contexts where teachers feel pressure to cover curriculum content and prepare students for examinations.

The expected outcomes of attending this workshop are:

  • How can schools support students to cope with the inevitable pressures of the final years of secondary school without compromising academic integrity in their program of study?
  • How can teachers work collaboratively to change their classroom practices to more student-centred approaches, while still delivering required curriculum content?
