AISA 2022 OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCEMENTS

POSTED: April 5, 2022Category: General, NewsBY: Steve

The Outstanding Contribution Award publicly acknowledges and appreciates individuals or associates who have made an outstanding contribution to the AISA community. We show gratitude to those who, through the embodiment of AISA’s values, contribute to our mission of transforming student learning in international schools across Africa. Each year AISA and our member schools are privileged to be backed by educators who give generously, selflessly and consistently to support AISA’s mission.

It is with great pleasure that the AISA Board announces the winner of the 2022 Outstanding Contribution to Educational Leadership in the AISA Region is TOM SHEARER.

To quote from the nomination documents the Board received:

Tom Shearer has been a positive instrumental force within the State Department for almost a decade. Tom was named the Director of the Office of Overseas Schools in 2017 and has led the office with great heart and passion for overseas education since then. Nine years ago, he joined the State Department as a Regional Education Officer (REO), and for over 43 years, Tom has built a stellar career as an educator and administrator, often serving and leading within the AISA region. Tom was always fond of the African region and went out of his way to support AISA and our schools during his tenure.

It is with great pleasure that the AISA Board announces the winner of the 2022 Outstanding Contribution to an AISA Programme is CONNIE BUFORD.

To quote from the nomination documents the Board received:

Everyone has a story about Connie. Her unfailing good humour and ability to see the best in every situation helped us to keep perspective and laugh at ourselves. Connie understood people. She engaged fully with everyone she met and made us all feel special. Her international career started in 1988 at ISK and from there she took on the role of Executive Director of AISA. Connie left the continent in late 1990s but her love for Africa never waned. Connie was passionate about international education and she embodied the idea of leading by serving. Throughout her career, Connie gave of herself fully and without expectation. It is with great pleasure that I nominate Connie Buford for the AISA Outstanding Contribution Award for continual service over an extended period of time.

We know the joy at Connie receiving this award must be mixed with some sadness at her passing, but the AISA community felt this award is a fitting tribute to a staunch supporter of AISA’s programmes over many years.

Full details of Connie’s Memorial Service (including the online live streaming of the service) to be held on Saturday, April 23 at 10:30 am at The Parish Church of St. Helena’s in downtown Beaufort, South Carolina, can be found on AISA’s tribute page for Connie.
