Standards, concepts, approaches to learning, and assessments – The how to guide for a 21st century curriculum

Innovative Practice Sessions

About the workshop

This session is for teachers and curriculum leaders to review their own curriculum with the intent of evaluating how their curriculum has the essential components of standards, conceptual learnings, approaches to learning that lead to authentic assessments. This workshop will take you on a journey from an idea of learning through to the final product of how to develop a 21st century curriculum. Learn the tools and strategies to develop any curriculum through connecting standards with concepts to develop meaningful learning experiences. The aim is to also connect approaches to learning to develop conceptual assessments.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to develop a standard into a conceptual learning experience
  • Learn how to analyse approaches to learning and connect them to a conceptual learning experience
  • Get a review on an assessment task and get advice on how to develop this through standards, concepts and approaches to learning
  • Learn how to use the strategies and tools learned to develop Cal’s curriculum

Key questions to be explored include:

  • Why are standards important to all curriculums?
  • How do you develop a standard to be conceptual?
  • Why is student agency vital to approaches to learning?
  • How can we develop meaningful learning that explores these topics?
  • What unit of inquiry are you going to take action on with this new knowledge?
