International schools are known and lauded for the rich diversity of their student populations. While diversity certainly has its advantages, diversity alone does not embody strength if it is not properly nurtured. All educators support the identity development of students through our language, behaviours, curricular choices, and relationships, whether we are conscious of it or not. Our action makes an impact and our inaction can make an even bigger, more costly impact.
Fostering a positive cultural identity in all students requires us to make deliberate choices about how we use our positions as educators to amplify students’ voices, recognize cultural value, and uplift young people during their years of self-actualization.
