AISA Webinar: Fostering Positive Cultural Identities in International School Students

Date: April 14, 2021

This webinar aims to begin devising ways we can transform our classrooms and school cultures by embedding practices that foster positive cultural identity in students.

International schools are known and lauded for the rich diversity of their student populations. While diversity certainly has its advantages, diversity alone does not embody strength if it is not properly nurtured. All educators support the identity development of students through our language, behaviours, curricular choices, and relationships, whether we are conscious of it or not. Our action makes an impact and our inaction can make an even bigger, more costly impact.

Fostering a positive cultural identity in all students requires us to make deliberate choices about how we use our positions as educators to amplify students’ voices, recognize cultural value, and uplift young people during their years of self-actualization.

This webinar provides resources that support cultural inclusivity rather than cultural assimilation in our educational settings in an effort to support holistic well-being and academic success. The objectives of this webinar are to:

  • Explore what it means to have a positive cultural identity and examine the academic implications
  • Address misconceptions associated with cultural identity and education
  • Identify resources and strategies educators can employ to embed positive cultural identity in the classroom and broader school culture
