Description

As online spaces become an integral part of education and socialisation, they also present unique challenges related to child protection, exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and digital addiction.

The discussion will delve into practical strategies for fostering safe and supportive digital experiences for children and adolescents. It will address the role of educators, parents, and policymakers in implementing robust safeguarding measures, promoting digital literacy, and equipping young people with the tools to navigate online risks.

Participants will gain insights into the psychological impacts of the digital age, emphasising the importance of mental health support in tandem with safeguarding. This session offers an opportunity to rethink safeguarding approaches, ensuring they are holistic, inclusive, and responsive to the complexities of the digital world.

    Priya is a highly qualified social worker and mental health practitioner with over 30 years of experience in education, social care, and mental health. Since 2013, she has been at the forefront of safeguarding initiatives in the Middle East and Southeast Asia and more recently she has been working with schools in Africa.  She offers training, and supervision, and contributes to both Government and NGO strategies. She recently chaired the International Task Force Child Protection (ITFCP) data recording working party.

    Priya serves as a school accreditation evaluator for the Council of International Schools. She is a proud partner of BSME (British Schools Middle East) and AISA (Association of International Schools in Africa) and a volunteer trustee for AEGIS. She is actively involved in various significant projects, including:

    • Delivering the Dama Al Aman student protection training within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
    • Writing content for safeguarding and wellbeing for platforms such as Educare, Eduspark, and Managebac.
    • Providing supervision for school counsellors and school safeguarding leads globally.
    • Conducting mental wellbeing webinars for Managebac and the International School Network.
    • Undertaking school accreditation visits.
    • Chairing the ITFCP working party on data recording and retention.

    Priya’s commitment to safeguarding and child welfare is unwavering. She firmly believes that the welfare of the child must remain at the centre of all educational efforts. Her previous roles have included providing safeguarding training and child protection consultation to schools in the UAE. She also founded and chaired the Abu Dhabi Child Protection Cluster Group, which collaborated with the Ministry of Interior Child Protection Center (MOI-CPC) to implement consistent policies and procedures within International Schools.
