This semester, the DEIJ Collaborative will be offering two online meetings wich are open to all members of the AISA community.

17th September 2024: Meet Our People – Establishing a Support Network

Creating your support network of like-minded individuals from other AISA schools is key to settling into a new school, being your authentic self and finding your way to thrive. Join us for a workshop aimed at creating a strong support network among LGBTQIA+ teachers in international schools.

In this session we will discuss:

  • Support Network Mapping
  • Building Connections

26th November 2024: Navigating Cultural Sensitivity & Identity

Join us for a workshop focused on discussing the intersection of cultural sensitivity and LGBTQIA+ identity in international schools.

In this session we will discuss:

  • Cultural Sensitivity and Identity Discussion
  • Small Group Breakout
  • Group Reflection
  • Wrap-Up and Next Steps

Share your experiences and strategies for balancing cultural sensitivity with personal authenticity. Let’s explore ways to address cultural challenges while maintaining our identities. We look forward to your participation in this enriching discussion!

  • Dr. Graham Carlini Watts
    AISA
    Deputy Executive Director

    Graham is an educational writer, advisor, and consultant with experience of leading professional learning in over 25 countries. He has published educational books in the UK and the USA, as well as publishing articles and peer, reviewed papers in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

    Before joining AISA, Graham was Global Director of Education and Training for an international children’s wellbeing charity; forming strategic partnerships with major funders, research partners, government agencies, and universities.

  • Mary Powell
    Individual Consultant

    Mary is an educational leader based in Kigali, Rwanda, which has been her home for 15 years. Originally from the United States, she has broad experience in school leadership and instruction, ranging from early childhood to higher education in international schools as well as education programs for sustainable development. Her roles have included director of education, middle and high school principal, program manager, teacher trainer, and instructor of social sciences. In each of her roles, Mary’s work has focused on developing learner agency and expanding inclusion to cultivate belonging for all school community members. She believes that international schools have a unique opportunity to model and drive global standards for innovation, equity, and ethical leadership to impact learning and wellbeing.

    Mary has been serving as a School Support & Evaluation Officer for the Council of International Schools (CIS) since 2021, providing guidance and support for CIS accredited and member schools across Africa and the Middle East. Mary is honored to be a contributor to AISA’s new handbook on advancing DEIJ in international schools. Mary holds a Masters of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership from the University of Illinois, a Bachelors in History and Linguistics from Grinnell College in the USA, and a certificate of International School Leadership from the Principals’ Training Center.
