Dawn was a dedicated primary teacher in Glasgow for 28 years, during which time she led numerous kayaking and camping expeditions across Scotland with senior pupils. These experiences showed her how many students lacked essential life skills and real-world experiences. Additionally, she noticed that many younger pupils in her classes were overly dependent on adults for tasks they should have been capable of handling themselves.

In response, Dawn created a life skills Award in 2006, designed to help children develop independence, confidence, and resilience. The Award, which started in her school, has since gained international recognition and evolved to include ten levels for children aged 3 to 13. As a passionate advocate for the environment, Dawn ensured that the Award incorporates numerous eco and sustainability challenges. Her goal is to inspire children worldwide to love and care for their local environment, nurturing them to become the environmentally aware leaders of the future.
