The aim of these sessions is for instructional assistants to be able to identify key vocabulary and language structures, in order to be able to employ new practices that can support the diverse learners in their classrooms.

Description

This course will be divided into four sessions. Each session will begin with an introduction to research-based information and strategies to support vocabulary and language in the classroom, we will practice implementing this information in small group activities, and will finally work together to plan and employ new practices that can support the diverse learner’s individual classroom situations.

These sessions will also provide a space for participants to share and learn from each other in a community of like-minded learners.

As a result of participating in this institute, attendees will be able to:

Utilize concrete strategies to support, broaden and enrich the vocabulary of English Language Learners in the classroom
Explore and plan for ways to implement differentiation strategies, specifically connected to language and literacy, for diverse learners
Become familiarized with supporting literature from Bringing Words to Life and Shifting the Balance

I am an educator, mother, partner, leader, learner and more. My many hats/roles keep me accountable and make me who I am and I hope to continue to be. I grew up, like many of our students, as a third culture kid (TCK) for the initial 16 years of my life. After university in the USA, I was drawn back overseas. Since that initial international move, I have lived and worked in China, Japan, Korea, Sudan, India, Bangladesh and Senegal with my family for over 22. I would consider myself a generalist teacher; I have been a homeroom teacher in most grades, taught English Language Learners KG-12th grade, been a learning support teacher and finally taught in the Early Years. I believe these experiences allow me to have a broader understanding of educators’ roles and needs within the school.

I currently live in Dakar, Senegal where I work at the International School of Dakar (ISD) as the ES Assistant Principal. I hope to provide a safe space to share ideas, inquire and learn.
