As the world grapples with the increased attention on social justice, international schools are experiencing a reckoning with their own need to examine equity. While international schools strive for inclusivity and respect for all, curricular choices do not always represent the cultures, backgrounds, and experiences of their students, the host country, or the world at large.

In an increasingly complex and global world, it is essential for students to both see themselves reflected in the curriculum (mirrors) and have access to perspectives that are different from their own (windows.) Students must feel valued and seen, and at the same time, students need to develop empathy and appreciation for what may be unfamiliar. How can educators make curricular choices that create a true sense of belonging, promote equity, and avoid the imbalance of over-representation? How can changes in curriculum lead to sustaining shifts in class and school culture?

As a result of attending this deep dive session, participants will:

  • Identify the over and under-represented identities in the curriculum through an inventory process
  • Identify places in the curriculum where short term and long term changes are possible
  • Share and collaborate with other participants and create a supportive learning experience
  • Learn one international school’s journey in pursuing this process of reflection and reform

The AISA online Deep Dives are a balanced mix of Synchronous (interactive online learning involving external expert and peer to peer collaboration) and Asynchronous (distance, self-paced and peer-to-peer learning) learning facilitated over a period of 5 weeks.
