AISA Online Deep Dive: Growing Student Agency to Meet the Challenges of a Modern Curriculum

The aim of this deep dive is to show the importance of focusing on dispositional thinking, Habits of Mind, as central to personalizing and engaging your students.

This series will focus on a framework for personalizing learning with habits of mind that includes the attributes of a personalized learning environment, dispositions for learners to work with critical thinking, agency and self-direction, and essential elements that guide personalizing instruction.  The sessions will explore how to engage and challenge student thinking by design. AISA is delighted to announce that this Deep Dive is co-facilitated by Allison Zmuda and Dr Bena Kallick, who is the co-founder of the Habits of Mind.

As a result of attending this deep dive session, participants will:

  • Clarify aspirations of a modern curriculum in accessible and invitational language
  • Become more fluent with 16 Habits of Mind and 4 Attributes of Personalized Learning
  • Apply key criteria that can be used to design or revise a course, unit of study or project

The AISA online Deep Dives are a balanced mix of Synchronous (interactive online learning involving external expert and peer to peer collaboration) and Asynchronous (distance, self-paced and peer-to-peer learning) learning facilitated over a period of 5 weeks.

    I have worked in education for close to 30 years — 9 years as a public high school teacher and 19 as an education consultant. I work with clients to imagine learning experiences that are worthy of the pursuit for both students and educators, designing work that is relevant, meaningful, challenging, and appropriate.     I also spend much of my time creating and curating —co-authored 11 books to date, curate and developed a series of online personalized learning courses and toolkits with Bena Kallick, author of Habits of Mind.

    Bena Kallickis the Co-Founder and Director of Institute for Habits of Mind and Program Advisor for Eduplanet21. She is a well known consultant providing services to school districts, state departments of education, professional organizations, and public agencies throughout the United States and abroad.

    In 2019, Kallick partnered with Allison Zmuda to start a new project: Habits Personalized. They develop instructional toolkits and coaching to support their framework for personalizing learning.  In addition, they offer online learning in the HabitsPersonalized Institute with

    Kallick’s teaching appointments have included Yale University School of Organization and Management, University of Massachusetts Center for Creative and Critical Thinking, and Union Graduate School. She was formerly on the Boards of the Apple Foundation, Jobs for the Future, Weston Woods Institute, and Communities for Learning. She is presently on the Board of GlobalMindED.
