AISA Online Deep Dive: Governance as Leadership – Leading International Schools in Challenging Times

The aim of this deep dive is to explore insight into the facets of leadership required of the board and the pivotal partnership with the Head of School.

Description

DUE TO AN UNFORESEEN SITUATION, THIS DEEP DIVE SESSION WILL NOT TAKE PLACE IN SEPTEMBER AS SCHEDULED AND HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Serving on the board of an international school can be a thankless task, often with a steady turnover of board members. Board members bring a wealth of expertise and valuable perspectives to the board, but without clarity about their roles and responsibilities and the subtle yet crucial sensitivities that exist around many issues, it can lead to poor decisions, ineffectiveness and frustration.  It is easy for boards to fall into common pitfalls that can create divisions within the board and disharmony in the school community.
So if you want to accelerate your appreciation of your leadership role on the board, and the ways in which you can be more effective,  join me for this Deep Dive!

As a result of attending this deep dive session, participants will:

  • Understand emerging trends in good governance of international schools
  • Appreciate different modes of governance and when they may be applicable
  • Understand the leadership aspect of governance and the different leadership strategies that may be appropriate
  • Appreciate strategies to promote supportive relationships between the board and the Head of School
  • Appreciate practical strategies for boards to be more effective in their work.

Facilitator

  • Nik Bishop
International School Board Training - Vivify Education
    Director

With over 25 years of experience leading international schools in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Nik has also served on the board of numerous large organisations, such as AISA, FOBISSEA, NEASC and the IB Heads’ Council.  Nik’s driving force now is to help boards with their professional learning, which includes his Board Essentials series of over 40 videos for boards of international schools as a “low energy, high impact” way to engage boards “just in time,” as they have to adapt to the fluid challenges that are dominating the landscape. Nik’s experience, on both ends of the board table, blended with research, has led to practical strategies for more effective boards and insights about some of the subtle complexities that exist in all schools. Underpinning his work is the desire for boards to have clarity about their roles and to have the insight necessary to avoid unnecessary mistakes being made.
