AISA Global Issues Service Summit (AISA-GISS) 2021

The AISA-Global Issues Service Summit (AISA-GISS) is a student-led summit hosted by an AISA member school that motivates and encourages students to enquire about global issues and learn alongside other delegates and changemakers from across Africa.

The Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA), in collaboration with the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ), is scheduled to host the 2021 AISA-GISS Virtual Summit from Friday 07 May to Saturday 08 May 2021.

This year’s theme will be centred around ‘Inguquko‘, a Zulu word that means ‘Change’. The youth of this generation are rising up, taking the initiative and with one voice declaring, ‘Change Starts With Us‘.

The two half-days over a Friday (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM) GMT and Saturday (12:30 PM – 5:00 PM) GMT will be packed with presentations from special guests, the host school and other participating schools. Schools will also have a chance to submit recent student service-learning projects which will be uploaded onto the AISA-GISS showcase webpage.

Registration for the 2021 AISA-GISS Virtual Conference will open from Wednesday, 21 April to Friday, 30 April 2021.

Please note that this event will be held at NO COST for AISA member schools and any invited community schools.

  • Kim Cofino
    Eduro Learning
    CEO, Founder

    Kim Cofino is an author, entrepreneur, educational consultant, curriculum designer and teacher originally from the United States and currently based in Bangkok, Thailand. Her work is based on nearly two decades of classroom experience teaching in Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan. Kim is co-founder and CEO of Eduro Learning, COETAIL, and Board Secretary of the Learning 2.0 Global Conference.

    Over the last five years, Kim has worked with school leaders, coaches and teachers as co-Founder and CEO of Eduro Learning. Eduro Learning offers personalized online professional learning for educators at the intersection of technology, coaching & leadership.

  • C. Anzio Jacobs
    Executive Director

    C. Anzio Jacobs has been an LGBTQIA+ activist in South Africa since 2009. He has been instrumental in the founding of several LGBTQIA+ projects including a university endorsed student pride parade, the Safe Zones Project at Wits, the Kaleidoscope Youth Network in South Africa and the GALA Youth Forum at the Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA). His published work includes a paper on Safe Zones in South Africa, a chapter on #FeesMustFall in Rioting and Writing: Diaries of Wits Fallists and research on the exclusion of Queer and LGBTQIA+ womxn in FMF. Jacobs is the founding director and sitting executive director of Scope.

  • Lexi Meier
    Mindfulness Trainer

    Lexi Meier studied Drama at Rhodes University and (almost by accident) discovered movement and the acute presence of moment to moment attention to the body. After spending six years exploring this embodied way of being present in performance and movement, she pursued an MA degree in Choreography.

    Lexi further pursued a Yoga Teacher’s Training in 2017 and later a qualification in the embodied practice of Tension and Trauma Release Exercise in 2018. Mindfulness techniques are integral to cultivating a loving gentleness towards self and others. Step by step, moment to moment. These are the things she now passionately shares in her classes and teaching.

  • Chris Mureithi
    Speaker & Author

    Chris Mureithi is an award-winning human capacity development expert and highly sought after international conference speaker, team building coach, author of three books, corporate trainer and entrepreneur.

    Chris is passionate about unlocking people’s potential and enhancing their leadership capabilities. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and a Masters of Science in Marketing from the University of Nairobi.

  • Sean Russell

    Associate Director of Youth Engagement and Partnerships

    For over a decade, Sean Russell has worked with a diverse set of non-profit organizations, corporations, and government agencies, to elevate the role of youth leadership in the fields of marine science, education, and conservation. As the Associate Director of Youth Engagement and Partnerships at EarthEcho International, Sean leads efforts to meaningfully engage youth leaders across EarthEcho’s suite of programs while fostering partnerships to grow the reach and impact of EarthEcho’s work to inspire young people to act now for a sustainable future. Sean previously managed the EarthEcho Water Challenge, a global citizen science program that has engaged over 1.6 million participants from 146 countries. In this role, Sean led initiatives to increase participation around the world, develop diverse education program partnerships, and equip young people with tools to translate their water quality data into meaningful action to protect their local watersheds.

    EarthEcho International’s mission is to inspire young people worldwide to act now for a sustainable future. We are a nonprofit 501c3 organization founded in 2005 by siblings Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau in honour of their father Philippe Cousteau Sr., son of the legendary explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau. Philippe Sr.’s belief in “a world where every single child can breathe fresh air, drink clean water, and walk on green grass under a blue sky” serves as our vision to this day.

  • Alice Whitehead
    Orenda Learning
    Managing Director & Education Consultant

    Alice is an educator and advocate for positive change in the world. She is an alumni and previous teacher at United World College of Southeast Asia in Singapore, where she held a leadership position coordinating an aspect of their renowned service program.

    Alice is passionate about supporting children and young people to learn to take informed action, realise their full potential as agents of change, and harness their innate desire to care for and connect with the world around them. She is the founder of Orenda Learning, an impact-driven social enterprise that guides young people, educators and the community in best practice service. Alice also envisioned and helped develop the Be The Change program.
