Senior House Tutor (Head of Boarding)

Purpose of the role

The Senior House Tutor plays a crucial role in the school and is a member of the Senior

Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Principal:

  1. He/She is appointed to lead, direct and supervise the House Tutors in ensuring that the welfare of students is paramount; that the application of rules, procedures and duties are consistent across the hostels; that administrative arrangements are carried out competently; and that above all, a spirit of unity, Pan-Africanism, healthy and cooperative relationships and happiness are fostered within the student body within the Hostels.
  2. It is expected that the SHT will be approachable and friendly, but firm and fair in his/her dealings with students. The SHT works in close collaboration with the academic campus staff to monitor the progress of students, since this affects life in the boarding hostels, and vice versa. It is most important therefore that when a problem is discerned or arises with any student in the Hostels, it is brought to the attention of the Vice Principals or Senior Leadership Team. He/ she should be aware of the job description, school rules, student handbook and all school policies.

 

Main Duties/Responsibilities
  1. Promoting the vision for boarding at the College as a home shared by intelligent and civilized people and influencing others to have ownership of the College's vision, mission, values, goals and strategic direction.
  2. Working closely with the Deputy Senior House Tutor to develop and manage the boarding and well-being programs for students and to meet administrative requirements of the hostels.
  3. Monitoring quality assurance in the services provided by the canteen to ensure that students are served with nourishing, plentiful and wholesome meals in clean surroundings, to ensure their physical and mental growth into adulthood.
  4. Creating an environment that ensures safeguarding of all students and acting swiftly to report all issues.
  5. Working closely with the Personal Social Health and Education (PSHE) Lead to enhance life skills.
  6. Coordinating the day-to-day boarding services and programs including supervision, support and guidance of House Tutor duty teams and handling student issues.
  7. Providing input in the development and implementation of policies and guidelines for boarding consistent with the College's priorities.
  8. Fostering cordial relationships with parents and ensuring that they understand and adhere strictly to the Hostel rules and regulations.
  9. Above all, acting as mentor, guide, advisor, disciplinarian and advocate for the students in his/her care.
  10. Paying particular attention to the needs of the SOS students, who may be far from home, and assist them to adapt to the culture, rules, and ethos of the College.
  11. Overseeing the prep system and have an overview of the academic needs of the students, particularly at the Hostels.
Key Skills / Competencies

Educational:

  1. Minimum qualification - first degree from a recognized University in either an academic or administrative field
  2. Training in Safeguarding or Child protection is essential.
  3. A Master’s degree and exposure to the IB curriculum is an added advantage.
  4. A minimum of five (5) years working in a similar role

 

Personality:

  1. Ability to demonstrate the highest standard of integrity to staff, students, and parents in all situations, regardless of the people involved.
  2. Ability to enforce rules and practices in alignment with established school policies.
  3. Ability to connect and work effectively with students.
  4. Knowledge of safeguarding or child protection practices, with experience preferred, and a willingness to continue developing in this area.
  5. Ability to be proactive, fair, and consistent in all situations.
  6. Ability to demonstrate care, compassion, patience, and tolerance.
  7. Ability to multi-task, remain organized and flexible in a dynamic environment.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  9. Ability to deal with and manage expectations of Parents in line with school policies.
Previous Experience & Qualifications

Educational:
