For schools give us the chance to show that we value black lives, the chance to address the racism that black people experience every day and the chance to show that our actions can match our words.
The debate over how and why black students are on the receiving end of systemic racism in education has been going on for more than 30 years, with evidence to back up the claim going back even further. Black students are systematically under-assessed by teachers compared with other ethnic groups, findings that bode ill for basing this year’s exam grades on teacher assessment rather than exams as a result of the coronavirus lockdown.
