The Governance as Leadership (GaL) Professional Learning Institute sessions are designed to build school teams with differing levels of experience, introducing newcomers to the triple helix of governance: fiduciary, strategic, and generative.
KEY AUDIENCE: Head of School, Director, Superintendent, Board Members, Governors, and Trustees.
Our second annual GaL Training Institute is being built directly from feedback from over 450 delegates who have attended sessions at UNIS Hanoi and last year at AISJ. We strongly encourage schools to attend in teams including Heads of School, Directors, Superintendents, Board Members, Governors, and Trustees. We will also host a luncheon on Friday afternoon for Board Chairs. This will a job-alike session facilitated by Chip.

Dr. Bill Ryan teaches in executive education program at the Kennedy School, where he focuses on governance and accountability in the nonprofit sector. His course Mobilizing Your Nonprofit Board was among the School’s first online offerings, and has attracted nonprofit leaders from over 60 countries and every segment of the nonprofit sector. He also teaches in a number of other executive education programs for nonprofit leaders, as well as in programs for leaders in higher education at the Graduate School of Education. Previously, he was for 10 years a principal and research fellow at the Hauser Center for Civil Society, where he led or participated in projects focused on several aspects of governance and accountability, authoring articles in Harvard Business Review, Nonprofit Quarterly, and Stanford Social Innovation Review. His 2005 book Governance as Leadership: Reframing the Work of Nonprofit Boards (John Wiley and Sons) has helped transform the way nonprofit institutions approach governance.
Dr. Chip Barder, originally from the U.S., has been an educator at the Elementary/Primary, Middle and High School levels in addition to the university undergraduate and graduate levels in 8 different countries mostly in international schools. He continues to be interested, among other things, in best practice in international school governance, head of school growth and development, and the opportunities and challenges of being in the same school with your own children. Currently on a "gap" year from his 40+ years of full time work, Chip sees himself first and foremost as a learner who likes to listen to and share ideas.
